SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Illinois is one step closer to having improved student discipline procedures to help make schools safer.

The Illinois House Education School Curriculum & Policies Committee approved legislation Wednesday to require the State Board of Education to draft and publish guidance for development or reciprocal reporting systems between schools and law enforcement.

Senate Bill 1400 would also require ISBE to publish guidance for re-engagement of students suspended, expelled or returning from an alternative school setting.

"Senate Bill 1400 is all about our babies, our young students, and ensuring that no matter what they're going through in the here and now, there's still a path for them to get a quality education and to invest in their future," said Rep. Maurice West (D-Rockford).

Rep. Maurice West (D-Rockford) presented Senate Bill 1400 during a House committee hearing on May 22, 2024.

The proposal could require new guidance for school bus safety and evidence-based intervention procedures as well.

This plan passed unanimously out of the House Education School Curriculum & Policies Committee. It now heads to the House floor for further consideration.

The measure previously passed out of the Senate on a 54-2 vote on May 17.
