SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Illinois lawmakers could pass a plan this spring to ensure school vendors and learning partners follow the state's new comprehensive literacy plan.

House Democrats want vendors responsible for English language arts improvement plans to abide by the historic Literacy and Justice For All Act.

The Illinois State Board of Education introduced the framework for the literacy plan in January. However, this bill could ensure schools are not limited by their vendors.

"We just want to make sure that that investment that we are making and that we have made in this literacy plan is followed," said Rep. Laura Faver Dias (D-Grayslake). "We put this plan in place. We approved it, so I would hope our vendors would. But let's just make sure that they will."

However, some Republicans argued that vendors will already follow the new literacy standards and a new law isn't necessary.

The proposal passed out of the House Elementary & Secondary Education: School Curriculum & Policies Committee on a 11-2 vote. House Bill 4902 now heads to the House floor for further consideration.
