SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Illinois high school students will start taking a new state exam this spring.

The Illinois State Board of Education recently announced that they are moving away from the SAT test. Instead, schools will require ACT testing for juniors. The switch to the ACT comes after ISBE's contract with College Board expired on June 30.

The state looks forward to the new act contract, which will be used until at least 2030. They shared with WAND that the ACT test "aligns with the Illinois learning standards."

The standardized test will be used to track educational growth and progress in the state. The ACT will continue to be an online test, with practice exams given prior.

The ACT will also introduce a science portion, with an emphasis on a strong math and ELA component.

Incoming Juniors can expect to take the ACT test in Spring of 2025.
