UPDATE: 4:32 p.m.

The ramp from Stevenson Drive to Interstate 55 southbound was reopened around 4:30 p.m. following a death investigation after human remains were found.

UPDATE 3:41 p.m.

Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon reported that the remains found near Interstate 55 in Springfield were female. The death is being considered suspicious and an autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday.

The identification of the person is being withheld until next of kin have been notified.

UPDATE 2:36 p.m.

Illinois State Police confirmed that troopers were called to the scene at the Stevenson Drive entrance ramp to Interstate 55 for a report of found human remains.

A death investigation has been opened. No further information has been released at this time.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Stevenson Drive to Interstate 55 Southbound will be shut down for an extended period of time. 

WAND News went to the scene and saw police cars and several vehicles stopped on the ramp. 

Drivers trying to get on I-55 south are being rerouted. 

Law enforcement has not released any more information at this time.
