SHELBYVILLE, Ill. (WAND) - One person is undergoing treatment after being exposed to a bat that tested positive for rabies, according to the Shelby County Health Department (SCHD).

SCHD announced Tuesday that lab tests confirmed a bat tested positive for rabies, and the positive test results came from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine.

The bat was found in Shelbyville on Saturday. The department said a female was exposed and is undergoing treatment. Her age is unknown at this time.

Health officials stated that if anyone, including pets, has been exposed to a bat, they must be tested immediately.

If a bat manages to get inside your home, SCHD says to isolate it, provide an exit, not touch it and call for help.

Pets are also urged to stay up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations.

Anyone with questions can contact the Shelby County Health Department at 217-774-9555.
