URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - The Urbana City Council approved a plan Monday night to build a new apartment complex on West Main Street.

The council debated the ordinance for weeks after public backlash to the proposal.

Neighbors were concerned the project would gentrify the area, drive up rent and change the neighborhood's culture

However, others said there is a desperate need for affordable housing in the city.

Council also approved two amendments to protect trees on the property and trees in the area.
