URBANA, Ill. (WAND) — January is National Hobby Month.
Every year, Brookdale Urbana, a local senior living community, takes time to celebrate and commemorate the special hobbies of its residents. This year, it is shining the spotlight on a special resident couple, Richard "Rick" Mercer and Katie Schroeter.
Richard has a unique hobby that he enjoys sharing with other residents. He enjoys building models of cars, planes, helicopters, and rockets. He has been putting together models since the second grade and has built well over 1,000 models.
"It just gives me something to do, and I like working with my hands," he said.
Katie's unique hobby is that she loves doing Diamond Dots. She has completed several special Diamond Dot scenes. The two of them love indulging in their hobbies together as a couple.
"I've probably done over 100," she said.
Both Katie and Richard said the hobbies keep them busy and they encourage others to find something to do that makes them happy.
