DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — If you love nature and want to give back to your community, the Macon County Conservation District has a volunteer opportunity that may be a perfect fit.
The district is looking for people, families and groups to sign up as Trail Monitors at Rock Springs. The Macon County Conservation District said it is one of the most flexible volunteer roles offered. Trail Monitors walk the trails in any of Macon County’s five Conservation Areas and report on conditions such as fallen trees, damaged benches, or trail erosion. Volunteers may also help with light trimming of invasive plants.
“You can go individually, or you can take your family unit out there,” said Jenny Garver, Volunteer Coordinator at Rock Springs Nature Center. “You’re getting fresh air, you’re getting exercise — and it’s an amazing way to give back.”
Garver said Trail Monitors act as extra eyes and ears to help staff. Volunteers are especially helpful after storms when trail conditions may quickly change.
“They help us see what the public is seeing,” Garver said. “Sometimes we get suggestions for new signage or hear about trees blocking the path. It’s about making the trails safer and more enjoyable for everyone.”
Volunteers can choose which conservation area and trail they would like to monitor, and how often they want to help. Garver said the role is ideal for anyone from retirees to school-aged kids in need of service hours.
Shelly Anderson, a current trail monitor, signed up two years ago and said it’s become a rewarding part of her routine.
“I’m out on the trails anyway,” Anderson said. “At the end of your hike or run, you just fill out a form saying where you were and what you saw. You take a picture and send it to Jenny — it’s that easy.”
Those interested in joining the program can attend a free Trail Monitoring Training session on Saturday, August 2 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the Rock Springs Nature Center.
To register, RSVP to Jenny Garver by Wednesday, July 31 at JGarver@MaconCCD.org or call 217-542-5536.
