DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — It's a terrifying ordeal for any parent, a missing child.
That's why the Macon County Law Enforcement Training Center is giving parents the tools they need to find their kids — should the unthinkable happen.
"It's great for the community," said training center commander Tad Williams. "It's good for our recruits...to interact with the community whether it's the parents or their children. They get to practice their skills too."
There are three critical pieces of information that can help identify a missing child: an up-to-date photo from the past six months, a DNA swab and fingerprints. Each parent took home all three pieces following Monday's program.
11-year-old Jaydan Rubsam was one of the kids who participated in the I.D. kit program. He says it gives his parents peace of mind.
"They need information," he said. "If they don't know where you are, they're going to call the police."
Williams says the training center's recruits helped complete 25 child I.D. kits Monday evening — in what he hopes is the first of many more events aimed to help central Illinois parents.
