DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — As the summer recreation season hits full throttle, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Illinois and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources have teamed up to tackle an often-overlooked threat: impaired operation of recreational vehicles.
The Boating and ATV Impaired Driving Prevention Campaign urges people across Illinois to plan ahead and stay sober while operating boats, jet skis and ATVs.
“Operating boats or UTVs and ATVs under the influence is just as dangerous as driving a car while impaired,” said Erin Doherty, Regional Executive Director for MADD in Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, alcohol is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents, listed in 17% of boating deaths in 2023. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also reports an estimated 112 ATV deaths last year involving drivers with a BAC of .08 or higher.
MADD and IDNR are urging Illinois residents to enjoy summer responsibly by designating a sober operator, waiting until after the day’s activities to drink, and always planning a safe way home.
Doherty emphasized that summer brings unique risks.
“People often forget that alcohol hits harder in the heat and sun,” she said. “You sweat more, get dehydrated, and it amplifies the effects of alcohol. That’s why it’s crucial to plan ahead.”
Doherty recounted a story of a family impacted by an impaired boating crash.
“They were on a pontoon enjoying their summer when another boat, driven by someone under the influence, crashed into them, killing their daughter on the spot,” she said. “These are the real consequences we’re trying to prevent.”
