DECATUR, IL- A nasty one car crash led police to arrest a man for drunk driving and armed robbery.
Decatur Police were called out to the intersection of Webster and Lawrence just before 3 a.m. Tuesday to investigate a roll-over accident with unknown injuries. According to sworn statements, when officers arrived they found a Pontiac Sunfire lying unoccupied on its roof on a chain link fence near the intersection with empty beer cans inside.
The vehicle's license plates were registered to 18 year-old Vola Rainey. Police located Rainey in the back yard of a residence on the 900 block of East Whitmer. Police say Rainey was bleeding heavily from a cut on his head.
Rainey told police he had crashed his car while driving a friend home, then left the scene of the accident. Rainey allegedly told police that he had drank two 22oz beers and smoked marijuana before the crash.
Rainey has been charged with DUI, improper lane usage, leaving the scene of an accident, operating an uninsured vehicle, improper use of title or registration and unlawful transportation of alcohol.
Rainey was also charged in connection with an armed robbery that occurred in June of last year.
On June 16, 2010, Decatur Police responded to a report of an attempted armed robbery in the 1000 block of East Moore Street. Police say Rainey and a juvenile attempted to rob a man for his marijuana. The juvenile allegedly told police that the two of them were armed with two shot guns and a rifle and attempted to rob the victim while he was sitting in his car, but the man drove away, injuring the juvenile.
All three guns were taken to the crime lab for examination. A finger print matching Rainey's was found on one of the guns and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Rainey has been charged with armed robbery. His bond is set at $35,000. Â Â Â
