Trump threatens Canada with 10% extra import tax for not pulling down anti-tariffs ad sooner
ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AP) — President Donald Trump says he plans to hike tariffs on imports of Canadian goods by an extra 10% because of an anti-tariff television ad aired by the province of Ontario. The ad used the words of former President Ronald Reagan to criticize U.S. tariffs, angering Trump who said he would end trade talks with Canada. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he would pull the ad after the weekend, and it ran during the first game of the World Series. Trump said on Saturday he should have pulled it sooner. Trump posted the news on his Truth Social platform as he flew aboard Air Force One to Malaysia.

Russia faces a shrinking and aging population and tries restrictive laws to combat it
Russia has grappled with a shrinking and aging population for decades, with President Vladimir Putin viewing it as a threat to national security. Yet despite efforts like cash incentives and family-friendly policies, the number of deaths now outpaces births. Economic uncertainty, restrictions on immigration and the war in Ukraine are making the crisis worse. Desperate to reverse the trend, Russian authorities are also rolling out a wave of restrictive laws, such as banning "child-free propaganda" and limiting access to abortions. Putin has said that he wants to see a return to a time when women had "seven, eight, and even more children.”
Virginia gubernatorial candidates debate trans youth rights as LGBTQ+ voters weigh a fraught moment
SALEM, Va. (AP) — The rights of trans youth could be a factor Virginia’s 2025 gubernatorial election and legislative control in Richmond. Republican Winsome Earle-Sears opposes the rights of trans kids at school. Democrat Abigail Spanberger has largely avoided the subject. Each candidate is trying to cast the other as the extremist on the issue. LGBTQ+ Virginians have been grappling with what it means to be queer and trans in a moment where their identities are thrust into statewide and national politics. Other Virginians, meanwhile, worry about its impact on their children.
Shutdowns began as a way to enforce federal law. Now Trump is using it to take more power
WASHINGTON (AP) — The government shutdown is quickly becoming a way for President Donald Trump to exercise new command over the government. Yet it wasn’t always this way. Shutdowns started as an attempt to tighten Washington’s observance of federal law. The modern phenomena of the U.S. government closing down services was set in motion in 1980 by a series of legal opinions from then-Attorney General Benjamin Civiletti. In the current shutdown, Trump has used the funding lapse to punish Democrats, lay off thousands of federal workers and reconfigure the federal budget for his priorities.
New Jersey officer stopped at ATM and pizzeria instead of investigating double-murder
FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey officer has been charged with misconduct after prosecutors say he didn’t quickly respond to and properly investigate reports of a shooting that turned out to be a double murder. Prosecutors say Franklin Township Police Sergeant Kevin Bollaro had been the on-duty officer on the evening of Aug. 1, when police received 911 calls reporting gunshots and screaming in Pittstown. But rather than responding immediately, prosecutors say he drove to an ATM. They also say during the time he claimed to be investigating the shooting, the officer was already on route to a pizzeria.
East Timor formally admitted to ASEAN in the group’s first expansion since the 1990s
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — East Timor has been formally admitted into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in the group’s first expansion since the 1990s. The integration of the region’s youngest and poorest nation — with just 1.4 million people — is being hailed as a symbolic step for regional inclusivity. East Timor, also known as Timor-Leste was a Portuguese colony for over four centuries before Indonesia’s 1975 invasion. ASEAN membership gives East Timor access to the bloc’s free trade deals, investment opportunities and a broader regional market — vital for diversifying an economy long reliant on oil and gas.
