DNA evidence found near scene of Charlie Kirk's shooting matches suspect, FBI director says
OREM, Utah (AP) — FBI Director Kash Patel says DNA on a towel wrapped around a rifle found near where conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated matches that of the 22-year-old accused in the killing. Patel told “Fox & Friends” on Monday investigators also have used DNA to link suspect Tyler Robinson with a screwdriver recovered from the rooftop where the fatal shot was fired. Authorities in Utah are preparing to file capital murder charges against Robinson as early as Tuesday in the killing of Kirk, a dominant figure in conservative politics. Patel says Robinson wrote in a note before the shooting that he had an opportunity to take out Kirk. Robinson's family has declined to comment.
JD Vance says national unity is impossible with those celebrating Charlie Kirk's killing
WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President JD Vance says the national unity he's “desperate” for after the assassination of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk cannot be had with people who condone political violence. The Republican vice president commented Monday as he wrapped up an appearance hosting Kirk's radio program. Kirk, the founder of the Turning Point USA political organization, was fatally shot last week as he appeared at a Utah college. Vance said the Trump administration will explore “every option to bring real unity to our country and stop those who would kill their fellow Americans because they don’t like what they say."
Trump deploys National Guard to Memphis, calling it a 'replica' of his crackdown on Washington
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has announced the deployment of the National Guard to Memphis to combat crime, testing the limits of presidential power by using military force in cities. Trump made Monday's announcement with Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, calling it a “replica” of efforts in Washington. Last month, Trump deployed National Guard troops to the nation’s capital, claiming it reduced crime. Despite Memphis police reporting decreases in major crime categories, the White House suggested the city’s crime rate is higher than the national average. Governor Lee supports the deployment, while Memphis Mayor Paul Young opposes it.
Trump says the US military again targeted a boat allegedly carrying drugs from Venezuela
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says the U.S. military again targeted a boat allegedly carrying drugs from Venezuela, killing three aboard the vessel. Trump announced the strike in a posting on social media. The strike comes two weeks after another military strike on what the Trump administration says was a drug-carrying speedboat from Venezuela that killed 11. The administration has justified the military action as a necessary escalation to stem the flow of drugs into the United States. But several senators, Democrats and some Republicans, have indicated their dissatisfaction with the administration’s rationale and questioned the legality of the action. There was no immediate comment from the Venezuelan government.
US and China reach a framework deal for the ownership of TikTok
MADRID (AP) — A framework deal has been reached between China and the U.S. for the ownership of TikTok. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Monday after trade talks in Madrid that U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese Premier Xi Jinping would speak Friday to possibly finalize the deal. Bessent says the objective was to switch to U.S. ownership from China’s ByteDance. China’s international trade representative told reporters that the sides have reached “basic framework consensus." During Joe Biden’s presidency, Congress and the White House used national security grounds to approve a U.S. ban on TikTok unless its Chinese parent company sold its controlling stake.
Little daylight between US and Israel evident as Rubio and Netanyahu meet
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel and the United States have shown a unified front amid international anger over Israel’s airstrikes on Hamas leaders in Qatar and its bombardment of Gaza City. On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stood together in Jerusalem, downplaying criticism. Despite President Donald Trump’s displeasure over Israel’s unilateral strike in Qatar, both leaders agree that the only way to end the conflict is through the elimination of Hamas and the release of all hostages. Rubio will head to Qatar next. Israel continues its offensive in Gaza City, urging Palestinians to evacuate as strikes intensify.
Summit leads to little action after Israeli strike on Hamas in Doha
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Qatar hosted a summit of Arab and Islamic nations in hopes of presenting a united response to Israel’s attack on Hamas leaders last week in Doha. But leaders offered different views Monday about what to do, and the group agreed to take only minimal action. Israel has retaliated against Hamas and other militants in Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and now Qatar. Before the summit, analysts floated possibly closing airspace to Israeli flights or downgrading ties with Israel. A final statement from the meeting only called on states to take measures to prevent Israel from continuing its actions against Palestinians.
Nvidia violated antimonopoly laws, China says
LONDON (AP) — Chinese regulators say a preliminary investigation found Nvidia violated anti-monopoly laws. The State Administration for Market Regulation also said Monday it would carry out further investigation into Nvidia's acquisition of Mellanox. Nvidia said it complies with the law. The investigation adds pressure on the U.S. as trade talks between representatives from Washington and Beijing meet for trade talks this week in Spain. The announcement comes after China said over the weekend it has opened an anti-dumping investigation into the U.S. semiconductor sector.
Wall Street rises to more records as Tesla vrooms higher
NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street rose to more records. The S&P 500 climbed 0.5% Monday and topped its prior all-time high set last week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite added 0.9% to its own record. Tesla helped lead the way after Elon Musk bought stock worth roughly $1 billion, potentially signaling his faith in the electric vehicle company. The week’s main event will arrive Wednesday, when traders expect the Federal Reserve to announce its first cut to interest rates of the year. Perhaps more important will be whether it hints more cuts are coming, as Wall Street also expects.
Spanish prime minister wants Israel banned from sports events after chaos at cycling race
MADRID (AP) — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called for Israel to be banned from sports events. He made the statement on Monday after pro-Palestinian activists disrupted the final stage of the Spanish Vuelta cycling race in Madrid. Sánchez compared Israel to Russia, which has been boycotted from international sports events due to its invasion of Ukraine. He questioned the ethics of allowing Israel to participate in international competitions while its military campaign in Gaza continues. The disruption on Sunday involved protesters throwing barriers onto the road and clashing with police near the finish line.
