DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Local food services are partnering to launch "Together, We Can End Hunger: A Drive to Feed Our Community."
This October, Catholic Charities, Good Samaritan Inn, Northeast Community Fund, and Salvation Army are hosting the drive with 100% of funds supporting efforts to feed those in need.
At the Northeast Community Fund, food lines the shelves of the food pantry. This market-style pantry gives people in the community the opportunity to shop for food items they need. These can include heart-healthy food items and non-dairy items.
"People are living paycheck to paycheck, a lot of our seniors are on fixed incomes, so the Northeast Community Fund is very pivotal to our community while providing a robust food pantry," said Angel Lawrence, Executive Director.
One in 11 people in Macon County are food insecure, according to the Northeast Community Fund. Recent spikes in inflation have caused some families to reevaluate their budgets and look to organizations like the Northeast Community Fund for help.
"We have been seeing here about an average of 50 to 100 more people a week, which is an average of 500 more a month," said Josh Perkins, Food Distribution Director.
Funding is critical for organizations like the Northeast Community Fund. This year, the "Together, We Can End Hunger: A Drive to Feed Our Community" is asking people to donate funds to support the Northeast Community Fund, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, and Good Samaritan Inn.
"Just helping and taking that extra $10 could make a bigger impact," said Paul Lidy, Director of Development and Fundraising.
You can take part in "Together We Can End Hunger: A Drive to Feed Our Community" by donating between October 1 through 31.
