DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Where others feel fear, Connor Phares feels joy.
"I like being outside," he said. "You get to enjoy the weather. It's breezy. You get a good view."
He spends his days three stories up at Overlook Adventure Park, helping people let go of their fear of heights on the ropes course.
"If you're scared of heights, it's a good way to get over your fear," he said. "You're harness up so you can't fall. You can go up and experiment and be up there with us."
The ropes course has two heights. The first level sits about 15 feet off the ground. The second peaks at 35 feet at the platform for the zip line. With dozens of rope and plank obstacles, a climber's gear becomes critical.
"We double check everything," Phares said. "We check their carabiners to make sure they're safe there."
The heights can be nerve-wracking, but Phares feels at home — with beautiful views and new friends waiting for him each day.
"You get up there and some people are scared, but you get to help them through that stuff," he said. "Other people are up there having a blast and running around like we are. Getting to talk to those people and getting to meet those people is always a good time."
