VERMILION COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) - The Vermilion County Sheriff's Department is warning people about phone scammers posing as working for them.Â
The scammers are making their calls appear to come from a legitimate sheriff's department phone number and are using the names of real deputies and local judges.Â
The victim is then told to give their personal information, buy bitcoin for a requested amount, and send the scammer a copy of the bitcoin receipt.Â
Law enforcement will never contact people by phone to tell them about an arrest warrant or fines owed. Illinois is a no cash bail state, so even if there is a legitimate warrant out, the person would not be able to post money for bond.Â
If you get one of these calls, hang up immediately and do not answer any of the scammer's questions or give personal information.Â
Call 911 to report the call and file a police report.Â
