DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - It's getting closer to winter, which means the its time to prepare your vehicle for the cold.

Certain elements of your car can be more susceptible to dropping temperatures and snowfall. Lindsey Kreher at South Shores Auto Service says some of the parts of your vehicle that are the most at-risk this winter are the battery, brakes, tire, and heating system.

"The cold weather really impacts the much strength your battery has. We've already replaced five batteries today," said Kreher. "You should know how your car starts and if you notice that it kicks over kind of slow or different, you should go have it checked."

As far as tires go, its important to make sure you have good tread and have the correct tire pressure. Pressure can be impacted by temperature, and tread will ensure you don't slide on ice or snow. Brakes will also help you ensure you can stop properly when bad weather hits.

Kreher also says this is an important time to check your vehicle, and get anything fixed that needs to be. As temperatures drop, auto shops tend to get busier.

"Be prepared and don't wait till the last minute and and hope that someone can get you in," said Kreher. "Especially the way things are today, shops typically can be backed up a week or so. And unless you want to be taking the bus for a week, you might want to take care of it sooner than later."

While it's critical to prepare your car, you also need to prepare yourself for winter incidents too. This includes compiling an emergency kit to keep in your car in case you are stuck in traffic or get stranded in bad weather.

"You want to prepare an emergency kit that has jumper cables, flares or reflectors, windshield washer fluid and ice scraper, traction material, blankets, nonperishable food, bottled water and a first aid kit," said Paul Wappel, a spokesperson for Illinois Department of Transportation. "You want to have those things handy so you're set for the winter, in case, unfortunately, you get stranded or you know, in traffic a long, long time."

Wappel also encourages everyone to keep their cell phone handy and a charger in the car. He says keeping your gas tank full is also crucial to ensure you can keep the car on and stay in the heat.
