(WAND)- The Urbana Police Department and the Mt. Zion Police Department are warning residents about a recent telephone scam in which callers impersonate police.
According to Urbana Police, an Urbana resident in their 70s reported receiving multiple calls from an individual claiming to represent the Urbana Police Department.
Police said the scammer, whose ID falsely showed the department’s number (217-384-2320), requested personal information and claimed the resident’s bank accounts were at risk. The calls escalated with threats of arrest and involvement of federal authorities.
The Urbana Police Department emphasizes that no officer will ever request banking information or demand electronic payments. While officers may ask for personal information during criminal investigations, such requests are typically made in person.
Residents can always verify the legitimacy of any request by calling Urbana PD directly.
Police said individuals should be aware that scammers can "spoof" phone numbers to appear legitimate. However, returning the call to the displayed number will connect you to the actual Urbana Police Department, not the scammer.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call should contact the Urbana Police Department at 217-384-2320
The Mt. Zion Police Department is also warning residents of a similar phone scam.
Mt. Zion PD said some residents have reported getting phone calls from a person posing as a Mt. Zion Police Officer. This fake officer claims to be collecting outstanding fine money and demands the victim provide credit card information over the phone to avoid being arrested.
Mt. Zion PD ensures that no police officer will ever contact you by phone and ask for money.
Law enforcement states unfortunately, these calls originate from out of the country and there is little they can do to stop them. If you receive one of these calls hang up immediately and let the police know so they can continue to track this scam and keep residents informed.
