SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A law taking effect at the start of the new year will improve access to Alzheimer's treatment in Illinois.
The State Employees Group Insurance program will be required to cover medically necessary FDA-approved treatments and medications to slow progression of the disease.
This law also requires coverage for diagnostic testing for doctors to determine the best treatment or medication.
"As approximately 90% of individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer's are 65 and older, these individuals already have access to Alzheimer's treatments through Medicare," said Rep. Mary Gill (D-Chicago). "This bill ensures equity for state employees under 65 so that they are also able to access these life-changing treatments."
Legislation signed into law last year require the state employees insurance program to cover medically necessary FDA-approved treatments and medications to slow progression of the disease.
The law gained unanimous support in the House and Senate this spring. The new insurance coverage will begin on July 1, 2025.
"Every moment counts for patients and their families facing this devastating disease," said Sen. Laura Murphy (D-Des Plaines). "By removing barriers to treatment, we allow them to receive timely and effective care."Â
