SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A proposal led by state Democrats could ban junk fees from the state of Illinois.
Lawmakers in the House consumer protection committee said they've experienced this deceptive practice, seeing the original price displayed, but will be charged a higher price after payment due to "junk fees."
The bill would require all fees to be shown clearly as a part of the original price. It would specifically target event tickets, food delivery apps like DoorDash and hotels. State Rep. Bob Morgan said this plan has been in the works for over two years.
"Junk fees have become so commonplace in the last few years that each of us in this committee hearing have experienced it one way or another," Morgan said. "Whether booking a hotel room, purchasing tickets online or ordering food delivery consumers are being deceived."
This policy passed the House consumer protection committee unanimously on Tuesday. Now the bill will head to the House floor for further debate.
