URBANA- U of I Police are working to make dorms safer this fall.

They're hiring seven security officers to patrol the residence halls.  The uniformed guards can radio to the police for assistance but won't carry weapons.

The patrols won't be stationary at any one dorm, but will cover zones on foot.  Police say after a crime spike last year having extra hands on deck will help make campus safer.

Students say the guards will help them feel safer on campus.

"A lot of people are really scared around the dorm areas because it's really dark around there so just knowing there's someone around there makes if anything happened I'd feel more safe," U of I Junior Melissa Bruhnke said.

U of I Police hope to start training on august 8th so the guards can start patrolling this fall.
