RANTOUL, Ill. (WAND) - The Village of Rantoul met with the U.S. Air Force to address chemicals known as P-FAS.
P-FAS is a group of chemicals that are used to make coatings and products that resist heat, oil stains, grease, and water. If exposed, you may face immune or thyroid issues.
"The contamination is in localized areas including firefighting areas. Areas around the old fire station and a crash station that was on the air field." stated BRAC Environmental Coordinator for Chanute Air Force Base, Paul Carroll.
Representatives provided residents with a timeline of testing and how long this would take.
"This summer we're doing two rounds of investigation. We'll take the data, we'll look at it this winter, coordinate with the regulators, Illinois EPA, and determine what else we need to investigate." said Carroll.
Testing is set to continue through 2026.
