UofI student accused of aiming pellet gun at police in custody

URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - A University of Illinois student is in jail after police say he pointed a pellet gun at them, causing them to shoot him last week.

23-year-old Samuel Applebaum of Flossmoor was shot Thursday after he called police to the intersection of John and Locust around 6:30 p.m. Police said he made the call, claiming there was a man loading a semi-automatic weapon.

He is charged with Felony Disorderly Conduct.

Police found Applebaum with a realistic-looking gun that he refused to put down. When he pointed it at officers, three fired at him. Applebaum was shot in the leg.

Applebaum's weapon was discovered to be a Beretta pellet gun.

The officers who shot him, UI officers Chuck Hoskins and A.J. Martin and Champaign County sheriff's deputy Cory Christensen, are all on administrative leave while an investigation is conducted. This is protocol.

Police are reviewing officers' body-camera video and surveillance video from a nearby apartment building.

Applebaum was treated at Carle Foundation Hospital and is expected to be ok.

He was then transported to jail.
