SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Former Sangamon County Sheriff's Deputy Sean Grayson died in prison, a spokesperson for the family of Sonya Massey confirmed Sunday.
WAND News partner WTAX confirmed with Massey family spokeswoman Teresa Haley that Grayson is dead. Daniel Fultz, one of Grayson's defense attorneys, also confirmed that Grayson died earlier Sunday.
Grayson was convicted of second-degree murder in October 2025 for killing Massey inside her home after she called 911 about a possible prowler. In January 2026, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison.Â
In a joint statement, Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci, attorneys for the family of Sonya Massey, confirmed that Grayson died from cancer.
"Sonya Massey's death was unjustifiable and she should be alive today. Sean Grayson's death in custody from cancer does not bring Sonya back," the statement said. "We wish his family prayers of peace, as we do for all who grieve a loved one. Sonya's family knows that pain all too well and will grieve her loss the rest of their days."
Grayson had been diagnosed with colon cancer prior to the 2024 shooting. He recently requested early medical release from prison, but was denied in July.
