SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) -Â Sean Grayson, the former Sangamon County Deputy who was convicted of second-degree murder, appeared before a judge on Thursday for a sentencing hearing.
In October of last year, a Peoria County jury, made up of nine women and three men, found the 31-year-old guilty of the shooting death of Sonya Massey inside her home in Springfield in July 2024.
Grayson has been sentenced to 20 years with 2 years mandatory supervised release. He will receive credit for his time served.
This case has sparked statewide outrage, led to legislative changes, and renewed scrutiny of police use of force in Illinois.
The deadly shooting gained national attention after body-camera footage showed Grayson firing his weapon at Massey after she had called 911 to report a prowler.
Following the incident, discussions about accountability in policing intensified, particularly concerning mental health calls and interactions within private residences.
