CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - Luke Altmyer says that last season was not the season he wanted to have, but the season he NEEDED to have.

The Illini starting quarterback had an up and down 2023 season.

He ended up losing the starting gig to walk-on transfer John Paddock.

Altmyer says he experienced growing pains and suffering. But the quarterback said he gained new perspective and even had some help from school psychologists.

"I feel like this year, with the help that I've had through, you know, Jason Everson and some of the counselors here, the mental side of my life and the game and the tools that I've obtained really, flourished and has come into fruition out there on the field in two days," said Altmyer. "When I turn on the film, and I can feel it when I'm on the field. Just the looseness, the confidence that I have out there just in my walk and my talk and what I'm doing, and I'm really excited and really confident for a really big year."
