Illinois is 16-4 in its previous 20 season openers, and undefeated in Shauna Green's three years at the helm. Last season, her Illini took down the No. 19-ranked Florida State Seminoles — the first time the program had earned a ranked win in its opener since 1998.
Green is 8-1 in season openers in her nine years as a Division I head coach, with her only loss coming in her first season at Dayton.
While Illinois Women's Basketball enters its 52nd season, the last time the Illini faced the Redhawks was in the program's first season, in January 1975. The Illini took the victory — the program's third-ever win — at a score of 60-50. In the historic matchup, three Illini combined for 48 points, with Betty Anderson, Marijo Dluzak and Linda Roberts scoring 16 points apiece.
This will be the first time the two programs will face off in Champaign, as the 1975 contest was held at a neutral site of Carbondale, Ill.
