DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - With a single to center in the second inning of Millikin's game on April 17th, Tommy Shaw became the all-time hits leader in Big Blue history.
"It's in the back of your mind but you can't be thinking about that or else it's really not going to happen, so I just try to go out and play," Shaw said after the game. "I knew I could do it if I got the chance. It took a lot of hard work, so I'm very happy."
Breaking records isn't new to Shaw. He now holds the career record for hits, games played, and at bats in Millikin history.
"When you've had the career he's had, you know you're getting close to a lot of records, so some guys let him know," Brandon Townsend, Millikin's Head Coach, said. "I think this is a big monkey off his back. He knew it was coming and hits are hard to come by, so it was good to get this out of the way for him."
Now Shaw is laying a foundation of success for the younger players in the program.
"I always tell our guys, 'Tommy has had a lot of success but his success is because of the seniors that came before him and laid the foundation for success and work ethic and just being winners,' and that's what we wanted to build into this program when I took over 10 years ago was being winners." Townsend went on, saying, "And Tommy is a great example of that."
The current seniors are also now the winningest class in program history.
