DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - We had some big storms earlier today. Although the coverage area was small, the amount of rain led to standing water in a few areas. So, what is the best way to prepare your home ahead of time for these big storms or any severe weather? Your checklist is below:
Secure loose items and outdoor equipment
Bring in or secure outdoor furniture, garden tools and decorations to prevent them from becoming projectiles during strong winds or storms.Check and maintain your roofing and gutters
Inspect your roof for loose shingles and clean gutters to prevent water backup and leaks during heavy rain. Even gutters that have a lead guard attached need to be cleaned, despite what installers may tell you.Install or test weatherproofing measures
Seal windows and doors with weatherstripping or caulk to keep out rain. Consider installing storm shutters for added protection.Prepare emergency supplies and backup power
Stock up on essentials like non-perishable food, water, batteries and first aid supplies. If possible, have a generator ready for power outages.Review and update emergency plans
Know your evacuation routes, create a communication plan with family members and ensure your home’s safety features (fire alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, etc.) are functioning properly.
Stay safe, stay weather aware and stay sweaty.
