DANVILLE, Ill. (WAND) - A reunion in Danville celebrates a former community staple.

"Chuckles" began in the 1930s and operated until its closure in 1970.

The plant made the famous fruit-flavored candy that started because the owner thought the nation needed a candy that would not melt in their hands like chocolate does.

Since it was during the Great Depression, the owner wanted to ensure it was a cheap, sweet treat.

The Vermilion County Museum is hosting "Chuckles Day" from 1:30-4 p.m. Sunday.

Vermilion County Museum Director Susan Richter said the event is a chance to reminisce about the old days.

"People were encouraged to send in a few days ahead, and on Sunday, when people do come and record their memories on little sheets that we can keep, so in the future, people that come in and are interested in the business here in Danville. They will be able to look back on those remembrances of people who firsthand knew what it's like or what the smells were like," Richter said.

There will additionally be an exhibit and a special program at 2:30 p.m.
