CHARLESTON, Ill. (WAND) - After severe weather moved through central Illinois on Wednesday, the City of Charleston has declared a state of emergency.
Charleston Deputy City Manager Steve Bennett said no injuries were reported in the city. There is no word on when the state of emergency will be lifted.
According to the City, officials are working through response and recovery efforts following significant storm damage in the area.
Charleston CUSD #1 closed schools Thursday so buildings can be inspected for damage. District offices are also scheduled to be closed Friday in observance of the Juneteenth Holiday.
Charleston Middle School sustained severe damage. All staff, students, families, and community members are told to stay away from Charleston Middle School until inspectors are able to assess the building next week.
Summer school will resume on Monday. Summer school sessions originally scheduled at Charleston Middle School will be moved to Charleston High School.
All athletic camps and events scheduled at Charleston Middle School are canceled until further notice. Administrators, coaches, and athletic directors will notify students and families of any changes.
Charleston residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay off the roads while cleanup efforts are underway.
Also, community members must stay alert for hazardous conditions and avoid downed power lines and other dangerous areas.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated through the City of Charleston and Coles County Emergency Management Agency.
