Mahomet-Seymour School Board unanimously approves $84M referendum on November ballot

MAHOMET, Ill. (WAND) - The Mahomet–Seymour School Board unanimously approved an $84 million bond referendum on Monday night, which would allow construction of a new school without raising the tax rate.

The current junior high school was built in the early to mid-1960s. Its capacity is 615, and currently there are over 800 students in the school.

Some classrooms have temporarily added dividers to hold more students. The school district has also added three portable buildings that hold three classrooms.

Voters will be asked to approve construction of a new $84 million school by issuing bonds. A current bond issue will be retired, and available from an existing facilities sales tax. It should be enough to pay for the new bond issue without changing the existing tax rate. The school would be constructed on 38 acres the district already owns.

If voters approve the referendum on the Nov. 3 ballot, the school would be completed and ready in fall 2029.
