URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - Urbana City Council passed a sweeping plan Monday night to limit and regulate surveillance technology in the city.

The new ordinance will require council approval of new police technology and databases.

There are exemptions for state-required technology, including police body-worn cameras.

Many in the public said that the new rules are necessary.

"These are all tools the military would use against its enemies. This ordinance takes a step in giving dignity back to the citizens of Urbana," said one resident. 

"The ordinance will ensure, despite the rapid evolution of technology, Urbana will retain its identity as a community that values privacy and one that protects civil rights and civil liberties," said another community member. 

Under the new rule, city council must be notified within 30 days of any violation.

A surveillance technology report will be submitted to council each year.
