Declaration of Independence

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — The Champaign County History Museum is launching a major America 250 celebration with a kickoff event and rare historical exhibit highlighting the nation’s founding.

The celebration begins June 13 with a free public kickoff at the museum, featuring music, ceremonial flag events, remarks from local leaders, and a public reading of the Declaration of Independence.

The program marks the start of a multi-part commemoration leading up to the nation’s 250th anniversary, including a special exhibit titled “Forging Liberty: The Road to Independence.”

Opening June 18 at the Champaign Public Library, the exhibit will showcase 21 authentic founding-era documents and artifacts from a private collection. Items include early copies of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, letters from George Washington, Revolutionary War-era maps, and other rare historical pieces.

Museum officials say the collection offers a close look at the nation’s founding and the events that shaped American independence.

“This is one of the largest and most ambitious exhibits assembled by the Champaign County History Museum,” said museum president T.J. Blakeman. “We want people to encounter the founding story directly.”

The exhibit will run through June 21 and is free to the public, though timed tickets are encouraged due to limited capacity.

The America 250 celebration will continue through the summer and culminate July 4, when the museum serves as Grand Marshal of the Freedom Celebration Parade and hosts additional festivities during the city’s fireworks celebration.
