SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill into law Friday to tackle growing frustration over digital grocery store coupons.

State lawmakers originally wanted to require grocery stores with digital coupons to have a paper option easily accessible for customers. However, this law calls on retailers to honor digital promotions through automatic or point-of-sale discounts, barcodes, or quick response codes.

"It is especially problematic when it comes to those who may not have access to devices, may be visually impaired, or those who may be technologically less adept," said Rep. Janet Yang Rohr (D-Naperville). "That's oftentimes our older constituents."

Grocery stores violating this requirement could face lawsuits and fines under the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Practices Act.

"People shouldn't miss out on savings because a promotion isn't accessible," said Sen. Laura Ellman (D-Naperville). "If it's offered, it should be usable to all, especially when a digital coupon can make a difference when buying in bulk with increasing grocery prices."

This law will take effect Jan. 1.
