SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Day one of the Illinois State Fair is in the books and the fairgrounds were packed from start to finish.
The fair brought live entertainment, food, rides and fun activities for kids of all ages, giving visitors plenty of reasons to make the trip to Springfield.
Vendors also gave visitors a chance to learn something new while out at the event.
One vendor showcased new technology, including 3D printers, hoping to spark curiosity in young fairgoers.
"We want kids to get excited about it and spark their curiosity," said Jennifer Jennings, communications director of the Department of Innovation and Technology. "Hopefully they'll be intrigued enough to go out and get their own 3D printer and create something of their own."
Innovation and technology took center stage in the Governor's Tent, where Jennings showed off a modern spin on a beloved state fair tradition.
"We're 3D printing mini butter cows; it's a tribute to 250 years of tradition," Jennings said. "The butter cow is an Illinois State Fair icon, so it's a nod to that tradition."
While there were plenty of booths and activities to explore, some visitors kept it simple and went straight for the food.
"You've got to come to the state fair and get a corn dog," said Alyssa Day. "I'll be back and I'm definitely getting another one."
Thursday night brought the Twilight Parade, which drew large crowds lining the fairgrounds for an evening full of entertainment.
For those who have not yet made it out, there is still plenty of time to enjoy all the fair has to offer.
"You have to get your staples: corn dog, lemonade shake-up," Jennings said. "And personally, I like to wrap up with ice cream in the dairy building."
