DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) -- Eisenhower High School has canceled its 2026 varsity football season.

Several Athletic Directors and football coaches who were scheduled to play the Panthers confirmed to WAND Sports that, due to a lack of football players, Eisenhower will not be able to compete this season.

Decatur Public School released the following statement on Tuesday morning regarding the cancellation of the football program.

"Decatur Public Schools #61 announces that Eisenhower High School will not field a varsity football team for the 2026 season due to low participation numbers and a concern for student safety.

The school's junior varsity football program will continue as scheduled, providing student-athletes with the opportunity to participate and develop within the program.

The school has notified the Illinois High School Association, scheduled opponents, student-athletes, families, and coaching staff of this decision."
