SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — State lawmakers are one step closer to tackling growing frustration with digital coupons for grocery stores.
The General Assembly originally wanted to require grocery stores with digital coupons to have a paper option easily accessible for customers.Â
A bill passed unanimously out of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee Thursday requires retailers to honor digital promotions through several redemption methods. Those include automatic or point-of-sale discounts, barcodes, or quick response codes.
"It is especially problematic when it comes to those who may not have access to devices, may be visually impaired, or those who may be technologically less adept," said Rep. Janet Yang Rohr (D-Naperville). "That's oftentimes our older constituents."
Grocery stores violating this requirement could face lawsuits and fines under the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Practices Act.
House Bill 45 now heads to the Senate floor for further consideration. It previously passed unanimously out of the House.Â
