DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The Decatur Family YMCA will host the annual Backpack Attack event, providing backpacks filled with school supplies to students.
1,500 backpacks filled with school supplies will be given out to students from 9-11 a.m. on August 1. New this year, hygiene kits with personal care essentials will also be available for older students.
Backpacks will be available at three pickup locations in Decatur:
- Decatur Family YMCA, 220 W. McKinley Ave. Families visiting the YMCA location can also connect with local organizations during a community resource vendor fair.
- Macon County Health Department, 1221 E. Condit St. The health department location will offer vaccinations, dental exams and additional health-related services.
- Johns Hill Magnet School, 1025 E. Johns Ave. Families should use the circle drive at the west end of the building near South Maffit Street.
Students must be present to receive a backpack. Backpacks will be distributed while supplies last.
“Backpack Attack is about more than providing school supplies,” said Shyler Kraus, Director of Development. “It is about helping children and teens begin the school year feeling prepared, supported and confident. By adding hygiene kits for older students this year, we can better meet the different needs of young people throughout our community.”
