CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — The Douglass Park basketball courts will get a new look this month. The Champaign Park District announced that a new mural will be painted on the courts.

It will be designed by artist Ryan Adams as part of the Champaign County African American Heritage Trail. The mural will feature the phrase "Unite, do right" in honor of the Frederick Douglass quote, "I would unite with anybody to do right, and with nobody to do wrong."

"Douglass Park's history and impact cannot be overstated," said Sarah Sandquist, the executive director of the Champaign Park District. "Adding unique elements that celebrate this history, as well as expanding the visual components of the African American Heritage Trail, is always a priority."

The painting of the mural will start on Tuesday and should be done by May 29. The courts will be closed during that time.

The park district encourages people to use the basketball courts at Wesley Park during the painting process. The Douglass Community Center will also offer free adult open gym time from 1-2:30 p.m. on May 13, 14, 21 and 22.
