TAYLORVILLE, Ill. (WAND) — Friday evening, Taylorville hosted their Downtown Black Friday deals to usher in their Small Business Saturday. After renovations to the downtown Taylorville area over the last few years, it has seen an increase in small businesses owned by Taylorville locals.

Douglas Cowell, owner of Sydney Lynn's Little Bookshop and Vinyl, said that the growth of the square over the last three years has allowed for specific niches to form. "Every store you're going to, you're going to have a different vibe from what the shop is like...want people to have that, you know, as soon as they walk in, it's like, well, I like this place."

Cowell said while small businesses can still struggle in the shadows of large corporations, they are still supported by the community — especially other small businesses. "They're not just thinking about their small business, they're thinking about the town's small businesses. And it is small businesses that makes a town continue to thrive. I mean, sure, you have the chain stores, but it's something like this. This is what makes people come to Taylorville."
