DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) ā A fire safety awareness promotion returns toMillikin University's campus on Monday. The Nick Project will be in the Doug and Diane Oberhelman Center for Leadership Performance from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m
The Nick Project was started by Sophie Schwalbach after her brother Nick Schwalbach died in a fraternity house fire near the campus of Millikin University in June of 2000. Recently, Schwalbach received theĀ Outstanding Young Philanthropist award at the annual Heart of Illinois Community Foundation Do Something Great Award for her work with the Nick Project. This award recognizes a person under 40 for their service to the community through direct financial support, development of charitable programs, volunteerism, and leadership in philanthropy.
The Nick Project provides fraternities, sororities, and off-campus students with necessary fire safety equipment. Organizers say the event will demonstrate how to use a fire extinguisher, and CC Fire Equipment will demonstrate. Local fire personnel will discuss fire prevention and what to do in an emergency. Millikin has partnered with Libby's Ace Hardware in Mount Zion for the fire safety items.
