SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — On November 11, the University of Illinois Springfield will host an event honoring veterans.
On Friday, November 8, UIS Students placed hundreds of yellow ribbons across trees on campus. The ribbons are along University Drive, Vachel Lindsay Drive, and the heart of campus. This has been a tradition since 2012. The UIS Volunteer and Civic Engagement Center organizes the display.
On Monday, November 11, there will be a ceremony at 10 a.m. in room 160 of the Public Affairs Center. Retired U.S. Army Col. John Rascheke, a Vietnam War veteran, will be the keynote speaker. Rascheke is from Geneseo, Illinois, and enlisted in the Army in 1966 and retired in 199 with military honors. He holds the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantryman's badge.
A flag-raising ceremony will follow at 11 a.m. in front of the PAC with music by UIS Students.
UIS Military and Veteran Student Services sponsor both events.
