Decatur Public Library announces 1-day closure in October

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Journey to Freedom: Illinois’ Underground Railroad Exhibit will be on display at the Decatur Public Library starting March 4.

The exhibit highlights the amazing stories of freedom seekers and the diverse conductors who helped them. The exhibit runs from Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at 5:30 PM to Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at 8:00 PM.

The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Using photos, videos, maps, and personal narratives, visitors will discover key figures such as John and Eliza Little, who traveled barefoot to Canada for their freedom, and conductors like Henry, who worked with Abraham Lincoln, and Mary Ann King Brown, who helped enslaved individuals escape in Springfield, Quincy, and Galena.

The exhibit is presented by The Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area, also known as Looking for Lincoln.

“We are so honored to share this new exhibit with the community,” said Sarah Watson, executive director of Looking for Lincoln. “Many of these Illinois Underground Railroad stories have not been shared in one place. It is so inspiring to learn more about the bravery of all these people who took so many risks to fight against slavery for the basic rights for themselves and others.”
