CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — Families gathered at Douglass Park in Champaign Saturday to celebrate Juneteenth with an afternoon of fun, education and community.

The event was hosted by the Champaign Public Library and Champaign Park District. It featured games, crafts and activities designed to honor the history and significance of Juneteenth.

Organizers said the event is a great way to bring the community together.

"The main purpose of the event is to commemorate the Emancipation Proclamation, but also invite community members, organizations and non-profits to come out and provide resources to the community," Champaign Park District Recreation Service Manager Merry Mitchell said.

This marked the 19th year of the celebration.
