SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Kidzeum of Health and Science will be opening summer camp registration with a new price — free for District 186 students.
Springfield Public Schools District 186’s Board of Education approved using remaining ESSER funds to underwrite the cost of their students’ summer camp registration fees at Kidzeum.
"We know that the Kidzeum along with some other organizations have some spectacular programs but we know that there's a cost associated with it, which created a barrier for some of our families," said Terrance Jordan, Director of School Leadership and Family Engagement, District 186. "Providing a wide array of opportunities for summer learning for students benefits them, benefits our district, and benefits parents."Â
Kidzeum of Health and Science will be opening summer camp registration with a new price — free for District 186 students. Registration opens at midnight on April 11 here.
Each week of Kidzeum’s summer camps will feature a new theme, including a favorite returning from last year: Flight School. In partnership with the Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport, Flight School week will harness every child’s inner engineer, pilot and mechanic as they explore the history of flight from birds to modern day rockets. Some activities will include designing model flying objects, meeting real pilots, flying drones and a trip to the airport for a behind-the-scenes tour.
"This gives us so many opportunities to engage kids with lot of different interests, so it becomes a great mix of teacher-led and student-led activities," said Leah Wilson, Executive Director of the Kidzeum. "We are so excited to be able to expand the reach of our programs."
Registration opens at midnight on April 11 here.
