Sangamon Co. Historical Society hosts annual cemetery walk

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Halloween will be here soon, but a history lesson on Hutchinson's Cemetery will take place on September 17, and you will never guess what building stands there now.

The Sangamon County Historical Society will host a program about the history at 5:30 p.m. at the Brecker Library.

Erica Holst, Illinois State Museum Curator of History, will present "Quite a City of the Dead: The Rise and Fall of Springfield's Hutchinson's Cemetery." Established in 1843, it was first a private burial ground where Springfield High School now stands. Organizers say Holst will talk about those who were buried there and which people were removed and re-buried at Oak Ridge in 1874.

Springfield High School

Sen. Doris Turner (D-Springfield) is the lead sponsor of a plan to allow District 186 to acquire the property at 521 and 523 W. Monroe Street to expand Springfield High School.

Participants are asked to park in the campus lot, which is located on the east side of Sixth Street at Keys Avenue, across the street from Becker Library.
