SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Lincoln Land Community College will be hosting events to honor African American History Month throughout February.

The month's focus will be “African-Americans and Labor: The Impact.” Various events planned throughout the month will highlight the African-American influence on American labor and how free and unfree, skilled and unskilled, and vocational and voluntary all intersect with the collective experiences of African American people.

The following events are free and open to the public and will be held in A. Lincoln Commons at LLCC’s Springfield campus, 5250 Shepherd Road. The LLCC African-American History Month Committee and LLCC Student Life are event co-sponsors.

Monday Feb. 3 – African American History Month kickoff, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Join the Black Student Union for Black History Bingo, hot chocolate and treats.

Tuesday, Feb. 11 – “Keynote: Spotlight on Agriculture,” 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Yves Doumen, founder of Motherland Community Garden, will share the impact African-American farmers have made locally and beyond.

Wednesday, Feb. 19 – “Loggers Coming Home,” homecoming game in Cass Gym. The public is invited to join homecoming festivities at the 5:30 p.m. women’s and 7:30 p.m. men’s games. The 2025 Homecoming Royals will be crowned at halftime of the women’s game. There will be special recognitions, including former LLCC athletes, between games.

Wednesday Feb. 26 – African American Food and Vendor Day, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event features free samples of African American food, displays on the wares of African American entrepreneurs and music.
