Champaign County African American Heritage Trail

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — A new bus tour will offer a chance for riders to immerse themselves in the Champaign County African American Heritage Trail.

The Experience Champaign-Urbana Foundation announced the inaugural tour will take place on Feb. 17. The tour will delve into the stories, landmarks, and contributions that have been pivotal in the community's development.

"We are thrilled to offer these tours as a way to honor and share the profound impact of African American heritage in Champaign County," said Jayne DeLuce, President and CEO of Experience Champaign-Urbana. "This initiative not only educates but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the diverse history that enriches our community."

The tour will be held on Monday, February 17 from 10:00 a.m.–noon, departing and returning from Champaign’s Douglass Center at 504 E. Grove St. The cost is $10 per adult and $5 per child (aged 17 and under), and the tour is recommended for those ages 7+. Due to limited space, reservations are required at ccafricanamericanheritage.org/community-tours.

Participants will visit key historical sites throughout Champaign-Urbana, such as murals and interpretive signs celebrating African American achievements and milestones. The tour guide will bring to life the events and individuals that have contributed to the region's rich cultural tapestry.

“Our aim is to foster a sense of community by highlighting shared histories and encouraging meaningful conversations among participants,” explained DeLuce. “We look forward to learning from our inaugural tour so we can further grow these opportunities for engagement.”
