CONDIT TOWNSHIP, Ill. (WAND) - The driver who went missing Sunday in Champaign County after a car was pulled from a flooded drainage ditch has been identified.
The Champaign County Sheriff's Office said the body of a teen, identified by the Champaign County Coroner as 17-year-old Elias Smith of Rantoul, was found a mile from where his vehicle had driven off the road over the weekend.
According to the Sheriff's Office, METCAD 911 was notified just before 5 p.m. Saturday of a vehicle that left the road in Condit Township.
Emergency responders from several agencies responded, but METCAD lost contact with the driver before they arrived, which was about 10 minutes after the call was received.
Police said a search for the vehicle and driver began in a large drainage ditch. Around 11 a.m. Sunday, police found a submerged vehicle and removed it from the flooded ditch, but no driver was found.
